David M. Boone - Marine Artist -
Biography David was born in Camden, New Jersey in 1946. He recalls his stirring for art as early as the fourth grade, when he did his first painting in poster colors on cardboard. As a youngster, his family lived in the Fairview section of Camden, along the Newton Creek. Venturing out in his father’s home made rowboats; he enjoyed capturing the river traffic, from ships to the ever-present tugboats, in pencil sketches. Along with the New York Shipbuilding Corporation building vessels of all types, almost in his backyard, he knew at a young age that he would find his place in the maritime community. In July 1960, he traded a crude poster color painting for a ride on the Curtis Bay Towing Company tug “Reedy Point”. As they say, the rest is history. During the 1960’s, he would ride the tugs and paint the scenes he observed, and he also learned the tugboat business. In March 1971 he started full time employment with Curtis Bay Towing Company as a dispatcher. Rising through the ranks, he was promoted to Operations Manager in 1992. After almost 29 years in the tugboat industry, he retired in 1999. Now painting full time, he has honed his self-taught skills to produce vivid, well-detailed watercolor paintings of ships and tugboats. His paintings are in corporate and private collections throughout the world. This award-winning artist continues to paint commissions for the maritime community, specializing in east coast tugboats. His extensive knowledge and artistic ability combines to make his maritime subjects come alive. His latest 10 painting print series of several “Tugboats that aren’t here anymore” has been well received. David and his wife, Ruth, reside in Oaklyn, New Jersey. Their children Steve and Tracy have left the nest and started families of their own. Dave and Ruth enjoy their new role of spoiling their grandchildren, Jack and Emily. David is also the President of the Tugboat Enthusiasts Society of the Americas, A member of the American Society of Marine Artists, The Camden County Historical Society, The Burlington County Art Guild and The Willingsboro New Jersey Art Alliance. He also keeps his ties to the Marine Community ongoing. His long range goal is to tell the history of Delaware River Tugboats in Paint and Print for all to enjoy!
